What it is
The device delivers focused ultrasound energy to a set depth below the skin, including the superficial muscular layer. The heat creates precise points of contraction that prompt the body to build new collagen over the following months.
What distinguishes it is that some systems allow the layers to be seen during treatment, so energy is placed in the intended plane rather than guessed at.
What it does not do: it removes no excess skin, replaces no lost volume, and does not give the result of a lift. Anyone with marked laxity will not get what they want here, and it is more honest to say so before a session than after.
Where it is used
- The lower face and jawline
- Under the chin and the neck
- A slight lift at the brow
- The upper chest in selected cases
When it shows, and how long it lasts
The effect is gradual. Some improvement may be noticed early, but the substantive result forms over months as collagen builds. Real assessment cannot come before then.
How long it lasts varies with age, skin quality and the natural rate of collagen loss. A session does not stop ageing; it improves the current position for a period.
Who it suits
- Those with mild to moderate laxity whose skin retains reasonable elasticity
- Those wanting gradual improvement without surgery and without downtime
- Those whose expectations are specific and realistic
- Those whose general health allows it
When we advise delaying or not treating
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Active infection or inflammation in the treatment area, or severe active acne
- Open wounds or undiagnosed skin lesions in the area
- Marked laxity or excess skin — that is a conversation about a surgical option, not a device
- An expectation of a surgical lift result. It will not happen, and we say so plainly
- Permanent filler or threads in the area — timing and interaction are discussed
- Bleeding disorders or anticoagulant use — assessed case by case
How the session goes
- Examination and mapping of the target areas, with a review of medical history.
- Cleaning the skin, applying coupling gel, and marking the treatment plan.
- Passing the handpiece over the mapped areas at one or more depths as planned.
- Duration depends on how many areas are treated. Sensation during it is noticeable and intermittent, and varies between people and areas.
- No downtime. You can return to your day normally.
Afterwards
- Mild redness that may last some hours
- A tender or slightly soft feeling to the touch for a few days
- No need to take time off
- Sun protection as usual
Possible effects
- Pain or discomfort during the session — this is the most prominent, and we discuss it openly beforehand and manage it
- Temporary redness and swelling
- Bruising, particularly in thinner areas
- Temporary numbness or tingling in the area, resolving gradually
- Slight asymmetry
- Temporary muscle weakness or local nerve effect — uncommon, and temporary in most cases
- Superficial burns or scarring — rare, and associated with inappropriate settings or energy placed in the wrong location
The experience of whoever performs the session, their knowledge of the anatomy and of the device settings, decides the difference between a good result and a complication. The device alone is not enough.
A note on darker skin
It does not rely on melanin to work, so it is less tied to skin tone than many laser devices, which is why it is offered for deeper skin tones. Temporary post-inflammatory pigmentation remains possible if marked redness or bruising occurs, and is managed with sun protection and early follow-up.

Common questions
Does it hurt?
Sensation is noticeable and varies between people and between areas; regions over bone are usually sharper. We discuss it before starting and manage it during. We do not describe the procedure as free of sensation.
When will I see the result?
Gradually over months as collagen builds. Judging it early gives a false impression.
Is it a substitute for a facelift?
No. Anyone with excess skin or marked laxity will not get what they want from a device, and being straight about that matters more than completing a booking.
How many sessions will I need?
The examination decides. Many cases are managed with one session and then reassessment; some are not.
Will I need time off afterwards?
No. There is no downtime, and mild redness may remain for a few hours.
Does it suit darker skin?
Its action does not depend on skin pigment, which is why it is offered for deeper tones more readily than some alternatives.
Can it be combined with botulinum toxin or filler?
Usually yes, but the order and timing are decided by examination.
What if I already have filler in the area?
Tell the doctor what it was and when. Some cases need a different sequence.
